How the Wedding Anniversary Became Named

It was in Central Europe that the custom arose to give distinction to the 25th and 50th Wedding Anniversaries. The husband crowned his wife with a silver wreath on their 25th anniversary and with a gold wreath on their 50th.
Although the ritual crowning became obsolete, the name of each thus became known as the “Silver” and “Golden” Wedding Anniversaries.
The naming of the other anniversaries is of a much more modern origin. Over the years since other “milestone” names were given such as Ruby for the 40th and Diamond for the 60th.
